A great investment performance for one year does not create a healthy retirement balance over time. Most Australians will be saving for retirement over a 30-year or 40-year timeframe, so the long-term return of your superannuation fund becomes very relevant when thinking about your final superannuation balance.

The top-performing super fund growth option over 15 years to December 2018 is industry fund, Hostplus’s Balanced option, with an average annual return over 15 years of 7.9%. The top average annual return over 15 years when rounded, is shared by two other industry funds – AustralianSuper’s Balanced option, and Cbus (Cbus Growth – Cbus MySuper).

Nine of the top 10 list are industry funds, while the other top-performer is public sector fund, QSuper. QSuper Balanced was equal fourth with an average annual return over 15 years of 7.8%. See table below for the top 10 super funds over the past 15 years.

The top 10 performing growth super funds for 15 years to 31 December 2018 are set out in the table below.

Background: Based on Chant West’s rankings, a growth investment option typically holds between 61% and 80% in assets such as shares and property. Some super funds may describe this type of asset allocation as a ‘balanced’ investment option, and this type of investment option is the typical default investment option for super funds (where you don’t actively choose your investment options for your super account). For information on the growth investment option, and other investment options, such as more conservative or more risky options see SuperGuide articles Superannuation investment: What is the difference between a balanced and growth option? and Want investments that help you sleep? The top 10 performing growth super funds for 15 years to 31 December 2018 are set out in Table 1 below. The top 10 performing growth super funds for 10 years for the previous 6 calendar years are set out in Tables 2 to 7. The top 10 performing funds for 7 years to December 2011, and to December 2010 are set out in Tables 8 and 9.
